Aborted Fetuses, miscarriages, and wandering spirits - life after death in Chinese culture
14 Replies

Hi folks ... I recently attended a ritual to feed the wandering spirits (ghosts), and to help the souls of fetuses, miscarriages and ancestors reincarnate more quickly. In 'Life between Lives', Dr.…Continue

What is the nature of your interest in the ARC forum?
I have been researching Chinese religion in Southeast Asia since 2005. Intrigued by the on-going creation of new deities and methods of communicating with them, I felt that anthropology offered the most dynamic research methodologies and analytical tools for my field of study. Having completed an MA in Taiwan Studies at National Chengchi University in Taipei, I returned to England to study Social Anthropological Analysis at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. After graduating, I joined Bristol University where, with encouragement from the founder of the Afterlife Research Centre, Dr. Fiona Bowie, I focused my research on spirit mediumship in Taiwan and Singapore before transferring to The School of Oriental and African Studies in London to complete my Ph.D. Adopting an experiential approach where possible, I spent eighteen months interviewing mediums in trance states, participating in rituals, and attempted to enter trance states myself with the intention of experiencing spirit possession first hand. My academic research into spirit mediumship and esoteric Taoist practices is on-going, and, while pursuing my interests in history, Asian civilizations, religious architecture and temple culture, I look forward to further explorations into the metaphysical dimensions of religious experience. My new web site is under construction, but some of my video documentaries can be found at https://www.youtube.com/user/fabian215963

A Chinese spirit medium channelling two Underworld deities in Singapore

Visiting a spirit medium temple in Singapore on January 11th. Underworld deities usually visit at night, so I arrived at 7PM, and after dark, the spirit medium (tang-ki) went into trance. The tang-ki first channelled a child deity from the…

Lingji temple - anniversary celebration and invitation to the deities to attend

"The borders of religion / spirituality / afterlife research tend to overlap and the borders blur depending on the perspective adopted. In this ritual, the connection may not be clear or warranted, once again depending on one’s stance. For me…"

Part 1: Is there love in the Underworld? Before the initial ritual and subsequent collecting of graveyard medicines for the leukaemia patient

(What follows is a short extract from my upcoming thesis. The conversation is between the Underworld deity Tua Ya Pek as tranced through his medium and myself. Shortly before this conversation, a girl with chronic leukaemia had approached him in his temple and asked for a cure. My previous blog article "Part 2: 13th March - collecting graveyard medicines" took place exactly two weeks after this initial meeting between the medium and the girl. I had been discussing with Tua Ya Pek the…

Part 2: 13th March – Collecting grave yard medicines

Well, tonight has certainly been one of the more unusual nights that I have had in Singapore. Michael, a medium (Chinese spirit medium: tang-ki) who trances the Underworld enforcer Tua Ya Pek (half deity half ghost) invited me (for the second time) to go to a night-time graveyard ritual to collect ‘medicine’ to cure people with terminal disease. This time I agreed to participate.

I told my landlord where I was going, as well as a friend Raymond (who is an expert on…

Fabian, I was intrigued by your post to Paranthropology inviting questions to put to spirit mediums (although can't think of one myself right now). It might be worth posting to this forum as well or making a link. While there is some overlap in membership there are possibly more varied/personal interest folk in this forum, and you might get a different sort of question. Just a thought.
